Despite business organizations beginning with simple options, newer business entities have become more and more complex with time, requiring the creation of several laws to establish rights and liabilities. Specialists in Business Law must understand the ins and outs of all these types of businesses and the major characteristics of these organizations. This program prepares students in a variety of business settings from sole proprietorships to general partnerships to large corporations, individuals who can master the intricacies of business law are of significant value to any business.

The Business Law program will provide students with the knowledge of what laws consist of as well as an understanding of how to get tasks accomplished in this field. The course will explore the types of corporations and how they function, including: corporations, sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited partnerships, and limited liability entities. Learners will also explore the relationship between business and the law with respect to the corporate financial structure, mergers, acquisitions, corporate dissolution, employee benefit plants, and employee agreements. Learners will gain a working knowledge of practical rules of law and legal terminology, as well as legal solutions for business-related issues. Throughout this program, learners will explore all of these factors and learn how the law applies to business operations every day.

 

Program Objectives

After completing this program, learners will be able to:

  • Analyze introductory knowledge of agencies and business organizations.
  • Explain the characteristics of sole proprietorships and how to operate this type of business.
  • Define general and limited partnerships in an organization and investigate the advantages and disadvantages of this business type.
  • Evaluate and distinguish limited liability partnerships and limited liability limited partnerships.
  • Explain the characteristics of limited liability companies and examine the history of this type of entity.
  • Analyze corporations and the several other types and classifications of corporations.
  • Define incorporations and discuss how this entity exists.
  • Explain the corporate organization and their agents, officers, directors, shareholders, and other roles.
  • Analyze the corporate financial structure.
  • Evaluate public corporations and securities regulations.
  • Explain mergers, acquisitions, and other changes to the corporate structure that can be made at any point in time.
  • Appraise foreign corporation qualifications and how to obtain permission from the appropriate authority to do business.
  • Define corporate dissolution and how to handle this circumstance.
  • Discuss employee benefit plants and employee agreement.

Optional Volunteer Externship Opportunity

Learners who complete this program are eligible to participate in an optional volunteer externship opportunity with a local company/agency/organization whose work aligns with this area of study in order to gain valuable hands-on experience.  As learners progress through their eLearning program, an Externship Coordinator will reach out to coordinate placement.

Note: Additional documentation including health records, immunizations, drug-screening, criminal background checks, etc. may be required by the externship facility.
